In a speech announcing the invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, Putin gave a veiled but unmistakable warning that if the West intervened in what he has called a "special military operation" he could use nuclear weapons in response.
"No matter who tries to stand in our way or ... create threats for our country and our people, they must know that Russia will respond immediately, and the consequences will be such as you have never seen in your entire history," he said according to a Kremlin translation.

Russia's aims in Ukraine (it's conditions for ending its invasion) are perfectly reasonable and just, as I explain here. Furthermore, Russia considers it an existential threat for the Ukraine government (clearly controlled by the U.S.) to pursue its contrary aims. Russia also insists it will use nuclear weapons to defend against an existential threat.

(CNN)Russian President Vladimir Putin's chief spokesman has conceded that Russia has yet to achieve any of its military goals in Ukraine and refused to deny that Moscow could resort to the use of nuclear weapons.
In an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday, Dmitry Peskov repeatedly refused to rule out that Russia would consider using nuclear weapons against what Moscow saw as an "existential threat." When asked under what conditions Putin would use Russia's nuclear capability, Peskov replied, "if it is an existential threat for our country, then it can be." As long as the US/NATO does not directly intervene in the conflict by using US/NATO military forces inside Ukraine to fight Russian forces, and instead only provides military weapons and training and intelligence to Ukrainian forces, then there is a high probability [see this evidence, for example] that Russia will win its aims in Ukraine. This fact is reflected in the slow but steady advance of Russian forces in Ukraine currently, despite US/NATO indirect support for Ukraine's military.
April 10, 2022, The Hill reported:
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Sunday said the U.S. ultimately wants to see an “independent Ukraine” and “a weakened and isolated Russia.”
Host Chuck Todd asked Sullivan during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” if the Biden administration is going to do whatever it takes to ensure that Ukraine wins its war against Russia.
“Our policy is unequivocal that we will do whatever we can to help Ukraine succeed. And it will be … President Zelensky and the democratically elected government of Ukraine that determines what that success constitutes,” said Sullivan.
“But at the end of the day, what we want to see is a free and independent Ukraine, a weakened and isolated Russia, and a stronger, more unified, more determined West,” he added. “We believe that all three of those objectives are in sight, can be accomplished.”
What this means is that if Biden pursues the U.S. stated aims of defeating Russia in Ukraine and "weakening Russia" so much that it will be unable to invade anywhere ever again [read that the Sec. of Defense says this here], then he, Biden, will have to rely on the direct intervention of U.S./NATO forces into Ukraine to fight the Russian military. This would no doubt be viewed by Russia as an existential threat justifying their use of nuclear weapons--thermonuclear war.
Obviously, thermonuclear war is not made any less likely, nor any less horrible, by saying, "Putin is an evil man and he must be stopped." Do I need to provide a photo of a gravestone with the words "But I had the right of way" on it to make this clear?

Far-right political forces present a real threat to the democratic development of Ukrainian society. This brief seeks to provide an overview of the nature and extent of their activities, without overstating the threat they pose. To this end, the brief differentiates between radical groups, which by and large express their ideas through peaceful participation in democratic processes, and extremist groups, which use physical violence as a means to influence society.

For the first 20 years of Ukrainian independence, far-right groups had been undisputedly marginal elements in society. But over the last few years, the situation has changed. After Ukraine’s 2014 Euromaidan Revolution and Russia’s subsequent aggression, extreme nationalist views and groups, along with their preachers and propagandists, have been granted significant legitimacy by the wider society.

Nevertheless, current polling data indicates that the far right has no real chance of being elected in the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections in 2019. Similarly, despite the fact that several of these groups have real life combat experience, paramilitary structures, and even access to arms, they are not ready or able to challenge the state.

Yes, President Zelensky is Jewish, but Ukrainian Nazis (who have U.S. backing) have the upper hand over him:

The Nazis in Germany never had a majority vote in the Reichstag (Parliament) and Hitler never won an election. If you dispute this, then provide me the election results you have in mind, OK?
Hitler came to power when President Hindenburg, who defeated Hitler in the election for president, used his constitutional authority to APPOINT Hitler Chancellor, due to the pressure put on him (Hindenurg) to do this from the top capitalist and aristocratic Germans who felt that only Hitler could destroy the working class that was threatening to make a revolution at the time. And indeed, that is exactly what Hitler proceeded to do, first putting the working class leaders (in the Communist Party and Socialist Party) in concentration camps.
Even with his political enemies in concentration camps, when Hitler called new elections the Nazis STILL failed to get a majority. If you dispute this, then show me the contrary election results. You can't, because they don't exist.
I suggest you read about this in William Shirer's famous book, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
The Nazis came to power because a) they were armed and used those arms against their enemies; b) the upper class in Germany wanted them to be in power, which is why it prevailed upon Hindenburg to appoint Hitler Chancellor.
This is how Nazis come to power, including in Ukraine, where they don't get many votes but they (with the backing of the mighty U.S. and the richest Ukrainians) exert control over whomever is elected no matter what reason people voted for them. This is what happened in Ukraine.
Zelensky Oppresses Ordinary Western Ukrainians Too
Zelensky and his fellow capitalists (including the American ones!) are using the ethnic Russians (whose first language is Russian) in the eastern (Donbass) region of Ukraine as their bogeyman enemy to control the Ukrainians in the western part of the country so they can get rich at their expense. The Ukraine government enacted laws prohibiting the use of the Russian language (a form of ethnic cleansing); when the ethnic Russians fought back against this the Ukraine government declared them the enemy and attacked them violently, thus making them a bogeyman enemy. Zelensky is doing exactly what the U.S. rulers want, in particular he is keeping Ukraine in big debt to the IMF, which in turn spells very bad news [click 'read more' to see the entire article in this link] for ordinary have-not Ukrainians. Capitalism in general has been very bad for Ukrainians, judging by the fact that the Ukraine population rose to its peak of 51.4 million at 1991, at which time the Soviet Union dissolved and became capitalist and Ukraine became independent of the Soviet Union and under the sway of Western capitalism, at which point its population dramatically declined to only 43.5 million by 2021 "due to high emigration rates, low birth rates, and high death rates." The Ukraine Government Does the Bidding of Ukraine Nazis
Read the Nazi Ukrainian organization, Right Sector's, program for suppressing the Russian language here [https://pravyysektor.info/national-development-and-environment-program, on its own website, in section 3.6, of which 3.6.1 reads "To make the Ukrainian language one of the criteria for obtaining the citizenship of Ukraine by conducting the relevant exam." [On May 24, 2022 this website page opened, but on May 25 it was unavailable for a while and then available again. I have no idea why.] Read the Council of Europe's (hardly pro-Russian!) Russian is the first language of the Ukrainians who live in the eastern part called Donbass and until the Nazis began their ethnic cleansing progarm by suppressing it, Russian was always used as the first language in the Donbass. Think how the French-speaking Canadians of Quebec, where French is the first language and is one of Canada's official languages, would react if such a suppression of their language was made into law by the national Canadian government? There would likely be a strong popular separatist movement in Quebec.
Now think what would happen if Canadian ultra-nationalists (i.e., far right, Nazis), who wanted only English to be used in Canada and who were armed, gained power over the Canadian government (as the far right has gained power over the Ukrainian government [read about this at https://freedomhouse.org/report/analytical-brief/2018/far-right-extremism-threat-ukrainian-democracy] and waged war against the French-speaking separatists with the Nazi military organizations now part of the official Canadian military. This is what is going on in Ukraine today. Suppressing a people's language is the initial step in ethnic cleansing.
The new Ukraine government (installed by the US-orchestrated coup in 2014 that relied largely on armed Nazis), reflecting the power of Nazis in it, passed a law suppressing the use of Russian by Ukrainians for whom Russian is their first language. Immediately after the 2014 coup, the new Ukrainian Parliament repealed the earlier law that gave people the right to use the Russian language as they wished. The acting President vetoed this repeal, which began a period of debate in the judiciary that resulted, in 2019, in a new law that banned the Russian language substantially. From 2014 it was obvious to the ethnic Russians of Ukraine that the government in Kiev was very hostile to them and very much influenced by and friendly with Nazis. This is why the ethnic Russians in the Donbass region wanted autonomy.
Despite the fact that most people in the Donbass region spoke Russian as their first language, for the first time this new 2019 law required all schools and universities to teach in Ukrainian, with special exemptions for certain ethnic minority languages but with no exemption, however, for Russian, Byelorussian and Yiddish. CNN reports on Russian bombing of Odessa: "Odesa under fire: Russian aerial strikes hit two hotels and a shopping mall in the southern city of Odesa overnight. Ukraine says hypersonic missiles were used in the attack. One person died and five were hospitalized, according to Ukrainian officials. Some people are saying on social media that Russia is targeting civilians in Odessa. Think about it! If Russia was actully trying to kill civilians, do you think that CNN--hardly a pro-Russian source!--would only be able to report "one person died"? If Russia was aiming to kill civilians there would have been thousands of dead civilians.
During WWII the U.S. bombed the German city of Dresden. "It is thought that some 25,000–35,000 civilians died in Dresden in the air attacks, though some estimates are as high as 250,000, given the influx of undocumented refugees that had fled to Dresden from the Eastern Front. POKROVSK, Ukraine — Russia’s nearly three-month-old invasion of neighboring Ukraine has been punctuated by flawed planning, poor intelligence, barbarity and wanton destruction. But obscured in the daily fighting is the geographic reality that Russia has made gains on the ground.
The Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday that its forces in eastern Ukraine had advanced to the border between Donetsk and Luhansk, the two Russian-speaking provinces where Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting Ukraine’s army for eight years.
